Where in the process are you?
Panel Cleaning (aka - Degreasing, Panel Wiping, Pre-Cleaning)
Panel Cleaning is also referred to as Panel Degreasing, Panel Wiping and Pre-Cleaning.
Panels can have grease, dust, silicone and other residues which will cause problems further along the repair process and may not show up until the paint is applied. This can ruin your paint job and you may need to start all over again. We highly recommend that you always carry out this procedure before applying filler, primer and paint. Silicone is a painter’s nightmare – many car polishes and cleaners contain silicone – BEWARE!!
The cleaning process:
Firstly remove all loose dust from the panel.
Use the appropriate Tak Rag to remove any remaining dust.
Finish with Panel Wipe using a dry, lint free cloth (wipe on and immediately wipe off).
Tak Rags
Tak Rags are sticky, lint-free cloths that collect the contaminant and eliminate smearing. There are three main types:
Standard Tak Rags - used before applying primer and paint.
Basecoat Tak Rags - used before applying clearcoat/lacquer. These rags are less sticky than standard tak rags which helps prevent any drag prior to applying clearcoat/lacquer.
Waterbased Tak Rags are also used before applying clearcoat/lacquer. These are less sticky than Basecoat Tak Rags.
